Dunleer AC 4 Mile
Road Race 2018
Sunday 15th July
at 3pm
remembering Seán
Carrie and Ollie Brennan
Report
A nice sprinkling of rain was very welcome at the Dunleer
AC 4 Mile road race on Sunday 15th July, an event which remembers Ollie Brennan
and Seán Carrie, two great Clubmen who have passed away in recent years, but
whose families continue the great tradition of athletics.
The men's race was won in 21.37 by Rathfarnham athlete Paul
Fleming, with Turlough Conway in second place in 21.44, and Michael Fox of
Armagh AC in third in 21.53. The ladies race had a famous face and winner in
Catherina Mc Kiernan, a great supporter of the race over the years and of
course winner of Rás na hÉireann and world silvers at cross country. Catherina
romped home in 22.45, with Karen Costello of Dunleer AC running a great race
once again and finishing second in 23.59. Ilona Mc Elroy was third in 24.28.
The Club was delighted to win both the men's and women's
cups for first place in the Club team competition. Dunleer AC men's team of
Anthony Connolly, Pat Fitzpatrick, Pádraig O Mahoney and Danny O Brien scored
40 points, just ahead of Armagh AC in second place with 46 points and North
East Runners in third with 82 points. Dunleer AC women's team of Karen
Costello, Nicola Courtney, Sandra Doheny and Denise Gallagher were first team with Team Carrie second and
Drogheda & District in third.
Another plus was the host Club had three junior men in the
top 3 placings, with Danny O Brien 1st, Fran Whelan 2nd and Neal Hodgins 3rd.
It was a great day for the Club and great praise and thanks
goes to all of the event stewards, the committee and of course the sponsors who
made it all possible.
Many thanks to our
kind local sponsors

The annual Dunleer AC 4 Mile Road Race will be held in Dunleer on Sunday July 15th at 3pm.
The race honours the memories of two Dunleer AC Clubmen, Ollie Brennan and Seán
Carrie, who sadly passed on some years ago, but whose families remain committed
to Dunleer AC with their children and grandchildren competing for the Club.
The race provides an opportunity to local people to come
out and run/jog and walk together around the 4 Mile loop, but there is also the
serious end with Club runners from all over the country competing for honours
and in particular attempting to smash the course records, held by Tomás Cotter
(19.31) and Fiona Roche
(22.17). There will be cash
prizes and bonuses for breaking the course records so it should make for a very
exciting days racing.
The Club is grateful to all of the sponsors who have come
on board to support this great local event. Entry fee is €20 and great value
for money considering the top quality long sleeved tshirt for finishers and the
refreshments in the Lann Léire Pavilion afterwards. Great credit goes to David
Carrie, Race Director who has co-ordinated the race preparation with the help
of his Club committee. All support is greatly appreciated.
